Glider Crashes in Lake County Leaving Pilot Deceased

The following is a statement released on Lake County Sheriff Office’s Facebook page regarding the crash:

On August 7, 2020, at 5:40 PM, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office received a report from the Williams Soaring Center located in Williams, California regarding an overdue aircraft. The aircraft was described as a LAK-17B FES MINI Glider. The aircraft took off from Lampson Airfield at 2 PM enroute to Mendocino County. The Soaring Center was able to provide last known GPS coordinates, which placed the aircraft in the area of Matthews Road in Lakeport. Deputies responded to the area and were able to locate the aircraft which had crashed. They also located the pilot and only occupant who was deceased. Deputies secured the scene and contacted the FAA. The FAA and NTSB will be conducting an investigation into the crash. The pilot has been identified as Matthew Herron, 89, of San Rafael.
