California Governor Declares Emergency in the Face of Heat Waves & Rolling Blackouts

As California stares down another heatwave of sweltering sun and triple digit temperatures, the California ISO has issued a Flex Alert requesting state residents to reduce their energy use and prepare for potential rolling blackouts. Governor Newsom’s emergency declaration waves “certain permitting requirements, helping to alleviate the heat-induced demands on the state’s energy grid”.

The following is a press release from the California Office of Emergency Services regarding Governor’s emergency declaration:

Governor Gavin Newsom…signed an emergency proclamation to free up additional energy capacity amid extreme temperatures across California.

The proclamation permits power plants to generate more power by suspending certain permitting requirements, helping to alleviate the heat-induced demands on the state’s energy grid. Facilities are required to report any violations of these suspended permitting requirements to relevant local and state regulatory bodies. The proclamation also contains provisions related to the use of generators and auxiliary ship engines.
