[9:34 pm REOPENED] Highway 1 Closed After Big Rig Overturns Southwest of Leggett

Categories:

Highway 1 is now closed with no estimated time of re-opening.

The California Highway Patrol told KMUD News that a big rig has rolled over, completely blocking the highway, approximately three miles from its intersection with Highway 101 in Leggett.

That means that there is no travel much further south than Laytonville as the Oak Fire closed Hwy 101 from Quail MD Overhead Bridge to Route 162 east towards Covelo. on September 7.

The alternative routes south are north and over Hwy 36 (particularly likely to be dangerous now as evacuation traffic from the Hopkins Fire is using it) or Hwy 299 to I-5.  [UPDATE: Branscomb Road is a possibility. Go west at Laytonville.]

Caltrans states there is no estimated time for reopening.

Thank you to Kym Kemp’s Redheaded Blackbelt for letting MendoFever use this piece.

UPDATE: 8:33 pm

As per a post on the Mendocino County Sheriff Office’s Facebook page, the 101 is now open both directions.

UPDATE 9:34 pm

The CHP is reporting that Hwy 1 has reopened. The vehicle has been moved off to the eastbound shoulder about 200 feet from the incident scene..

I like to think of myself as a journalist for the everyman. Journalism has become a craft practiced largely by the urban elite. It’s time to take it back. I have been an Emerald Triangle resident since 2006 and this is year ten in Mendocino County. Please, email me at matthewplafever@gmail.com if you know a story that needs to be told.
