Two Fatalities and One Major Injury After Single Car Traffic Collision in Covelo

The following is a press release from the California Highway Patrol

On October 25, 2020, at approximately 2346 hours, an adult female was driving a Toyota Tacoma northbound on Howard St. north of SR-162 at a high rate of speed. There was an adult male in the front passenger seat and an adult female in the rear seat. For reasons still under investigation, the female drove the Toyota off the east roadway edge of Howard St., through a wood fence prior to colliding with a tree. The female driver and male front passenger succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced deceased at the scene. The female rear passenger was flown to Enloe Medical Center in Chico with major injuries. The identity of the driver and front passenger are being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The identity of the rear passenger is being withheld pending positive identification.

Impairment as a factor is still under investigation.

Long Valley Volunteer Fire Department, CalFire, Reach Air, Laytonville Ambulance and the Mendocino County Sheriffs Department assisted with processing the collision scene and transporting the injured party.

  1. This report doesn’t make sense, Howard St. is West of highway 162 and runs east-west, so they would not have been traveling northbound on Howard. CHP’s lack of awareness of our downtown streets is perhaps an indicator that they don’t spend enough time here, which would explain how the exhibition driving, which happens several nights a week, and daily reckless driving, with squealing tires heard all hours of the day, is going unchecked and we are seeing so many injuries and deaths. CHP needs to start paying a lot more attention to the safety needs of this community.

      • Actually, SR162 runs north and south. Howard St runs eat and west. Next time the sun is either seeing our riding drive towards the sun on Howard St that should answer any directional questions there may be.
