Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office Warns of Phone Scam Asking for Social Security Numbers

Categories:

We’ve received a number of calls about a phone scam in our area (primarily in Boonville) where the caller insists on getting your social security number and identified themselves as an Internal Revenue Service agent. The caller may state they have knowledge of your social security number being used fraudulently and offer to help you clear it up. PLEASE NEVER GIVE OUT THAT INFORMATION!

This is not normal business practice for banks, law enforcement or any government agency. They will never expect you to provide that type of information over the phone.#ScamAlert
