Vehicle Fire in Covelo Causes Explosions and Burns 1/8 Acre of Wildland

At 8:56 p.m., scanner traffic indicated dispatch received multiple reports of a residential structure in Covelo on Refuse Road near the Covelo Dump. When fire personnel reported to the scene, they discovered the fire was a vehicle fire that had spread into nearby wildland burning approximately 1/8 of an acre.

The dispatcher told responding fire personnel “explosions were heard, black smoke and an orange glow were visible.” The dispatcher conveyed a reporting party characterized the explosions as “continuous.” A firefighter told dispatch the vehicle was one mile past the spot when Refuse Road transitions from pavement to unpaved.

The Incident Commander reported the forward progress of the wildland fire has been stopped growing to approximately .14 acres. The fire is approximately 45 minutes from being under complete control, reported the Incident Commander.
