The following is a press release issued by the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:

Stolen .45 caliber Semi-Automatic Pistol
Recovered 07-02-2021 in Covelo, CA
On 07-02-2021 at approximately 5:15 AM Mendocino County Sheriff’s Deputies contacted Steve Zimmerman in a vacant lot at the intersection of Foothill Boulevard and Tabor Lane in Covelo, California.
Zimmerman was observed walking away from a vehicle parked in the vacant lot. Deputies were aware Zimmerman had an outstanding felony warrant for his arrest for violation of probation.
Deputies observed ammunition in the vehicle Zimmerman was seen walking away from and conducted a search of the vehicle.
Deputies further located a .45 ACP caliber pistol and loaded ammunition magazine under the driver’s seat along with indicia indicating the vehicle belonged to Zimmerman.
Zimmerman is a convicted felon, on Mendocino County felony probation and is prohibited from possessing any firearms or ammunition.
Zimmerman was arrested for the listed violations and booked into the Mendocino County Jail where he was to be held on a No Bail status.
The Deputy investigating the incident subsequently learned the firearm recovered from Zimmerman had been previously reported stolen in Mendocino County and Zimmerman was additionally charged with possession of stolen property.
