Chaotic Traffic Accidents North of Willits Result in One Fatality and Highway 101 at a Standstill

Categories:

Scanner traffic and the California Highway Patrol Traffic Incident Information page indicate first responders are stretched thin attempting to address two separate traffic incidents: one near the intersection of Highway 101 and Highway 162 in Longvale and one at Oak Moss Rest Area just south of the aforementioned intersection. The Incident Commander confirmed one fatality has resulted from one of the traffic collisions and has canceled incoming air ambulance.

Officer Rick Fowler of the California Highway Patrol Garberville Office could not confirm a fatality resulted from the collision but, as stated, the Incident Commander reported multiple times the confirmation of a fatality.

Officer Fowler also stated traffic on Highway 101 will be significantly impeded and possibly closed as the first responders address the accidents.

Just before noon first responders were dispatched to one traffic collision described as a van that reportedly “rolled six times” resulting in a party being “pinned under the vehicle.”

The other traffic collision reportedly involved a black Nissan X-Terra SUV at 11:58 a.m. a truck was reported to be lying on its side blocking both lanes while the X-Terra was reportedly partially blocking a lane. The CHP Traffic Incident Information page indicated the second accident reportedly had no injuries.

Please remember that this story is unfolding. Information is being reported as we gather it. However, some of the information coming from witnesses and initial official reports could be wrong. We will do our best to get the facts but, in the case that something is inaccurate, we will update with correct information as soon as we can.

  1. Last paragraph… “at 11:58 p.m.” Should this be 11:58 AM? Just before noon? Or was this last night, just before midnight?

  2. We came up on it at 12:13pm (just after noon) and the CHP, fire, and ambulance was just arriving. Traffic was being routed around the accident by construction crews and bystanders and was not backed up yet.
