The following is a press release issued by the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:
Lake County Major Crimes Detectives have conducted numerous interviews and collected evidence related to this incident. On July 7th, 2021, a female reported she had been sexually assaulted at gunpoint in her home by the deceased male subject that has been identified as, Charles Vernon McClelland, 56, of Rohnert Park. The victim reported she and McClelland had been in an on again off again relationship for approximately five years. After the initial sexual assault, the victim reported she was able to get possession of the handgun. McClelland attempted to sexually assault her again and she discharged the handgun multiple times killing him. The female victim has continued to cooperate fully with the investigation. Detectives are continuing to collect evidence and conduct interviews. McClelland’s autopsy was conducted on Thursday July 8th and confirmed he died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds.
