MendoMoments: The Long and Winding Philo-Greenwood Road

Categories:
The Long and Winding Philo-Greenwood Road [Photograph by Eric Burch]

Mendocino County photographer Eric Burch was not in much of a “photographic frame of mind” on Saturday, August 21, but he wanted to go on a drive. Over a decade ago, Burch remembered traveling the Philo-Greenwood Road, narrow and winding, and he had a yearning to return.

As he made his way down the road, the photographic instinct took hold. He lowered his camera to the road capturing the perpendicular yellow lines as they meandered towards the horizon over rolling hills.

And now, a prayer regarding these sorts of roads from Sir Paul McCartney:

“The long and winding road
That leads to your door
Will never disappear
I’ve seen that road before
It always leads me here
Lead me to you door”

MendoFever’s newest column, MendoMoments, is dedicated to showcasing the land, animals, and people that make up Mendocino County. All Mendocino County residents and visitors are invited to participate. Send photographs to matthewplafever@gmail.com including a description of what your photograph depicts, where it was taken, and any other important details.

  1. The long and winding road
    That leads to your door
    Will never disappear
    I’ve seen that road before
    It always leads me here
    Lead me to you door
But, I never reached your door
Along that long and winding road
    The potholes and broken pavement
    Kept me far away.

I like to think of myself as a reporter for the Average Joe. Journalism has become a craft defined largely by city dwellers on America's coasts. It’s time to take it back. I have been an Emerald Triangle resident since 2006 and this is year ten in Mendocino County. Please, email me at matthewplafever@gmail.com if you know a story that needs to be told.
