Decomposing Body Found in Abandoned Vehicle by Game Warden, Says MCSO

Categories:
Death Investigation 1

Details continue to emerge regarding the body found in the trunk of a vehicle alongside the 27000 block of Mendocino Pass Road northeast of Covelo yesterday afternoon.

Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office Captain Greg Van Patten told us late yesterday a Fish and Wildlife Warden located the deceased body in the trunk of a vehicle parked along the roadside.

Captain Van Patten said the body is “decomposed and is unidentified at this time.” The body is “probably” an adult male, Captain Van Patten said, but “no official determination has been made at this point due to decomposition.”

As to the manner of death, Captain Van Patten explained that the state of decomposition inhibits investigators’ ability to determine how the person died just from looking at the body. An autopsy will need to be conducted.

When asked whether the death is being investigated as a homicide, Captain Van Patten said, “being in the trunk definitely makes it suspicious.”

The autopsy will be conducted likely this Wednesday, Captain Van Patten said, which will provide “an idea of what the cause of death was unless it’s not obvious and BA/Toxicology is needed.”

I like to think of myself as a reporter for the Average Joe. Journalism has become a craft defined largely by city dwellers on America's coasts. It’s time to take it back. I have been an Emerald Triangle resident since 2006 and this is year ten in Mendocino County. Please, email me at matthewplafever@gmail.com if you know a story that needs to be told.
