Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office Captain Greg Van Patten has confirmed the body found decomposing in a vehicle abandoned alongside Mendocino Pass Road northeast of Covelo was that of a Mexican national named Marco Antonio Barrera Beltran.
Beltran was 51-years-old from Ceres, California “via Michoacán”, a state in southwest Mexico.
Paloma Del Rio, Beltran’s daughter who lives in Mexico City, told us all the memories she has of her father are “‘beautiful.” She called him “the best dad.”
The last memory Del Rio has of her father “was when I finished university, he told me he was very proud of me.”
As to what Beltran was doing in Round Valley before his death, Captain Van Patten said that information could not be released yet due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.
Beltran’s body was discovered on October 3, 2021, after a game warden investigated a vehicle abandoned alongside rural Mendocino Pass Road.
Late last week MCSO detectives investigated a Covelo home on Henderson Lane thought to be connected “with the homicide in Covelo involving the deceased male in the trunk of the vehicle.” No information has been released about what was located at the residence.
Soon after the discovery of Beltran’s body, Captain Van Patten characterized the investigation into his homicide as “time-consuming” because of its complexity and described the crime as “body dump type of murder.”
