State Route 162 Finally Reopens After Hazmat Team Secures Overturned Propane Truck

Scanner traffic from approximately 11:30 a.m. indicates State Route 162, the primary artery between Round Valley and Highway 101, has reopened after nearly 48 hours of hard closure caused by an overturned propane truck.

Officers at the scene told the dispatcher that hazardous material officials had determined the incident secure and thru traffic could resume.

Around 11:30 a.m. on November 9, 2021, a propane truck overturned on the rural, windy road. As per a press release from the California Highway Patrol Garberville office, the overturned truck resulted in a “large release of gas propane.” CHP, Caltrans, local fire departments, and hazardous materials specialists assessed the scene and determined off-gassing was necessary and the road would remain closed until “deemed safe.”
