MendoMoments: Sunset at Blues Beach

Categories:
A sunset from Blues Beach [Picture provided by Nathan Daniel]

Long-time Mendocino County resident Nathan Daniel found himself on the edge of the Pacific Ocean, staring at a great blue expanse, tinged with the dayglo orange of the setting sun.

There at Blues Beach, Daniel told us the sight he saw reminded him of why he often calls this particular spot “The Magical Beach.”

Emily Dickinson, the 19th-century American poet, used her words to capture the essence of what Daniel photographed that recent autumn evening:

The Sea of Sunset

This is the land the sunset washes,
These are the banks of the Yellow Sea;
Where it rose, or whither it rushes,
These are the western mystery!

Night after night her purple traffic
Strews the landing with opal bales;
Merchantmen poise upon horizons,
Dip, and vanish with fairy sails.

MendoMoments, is dedicated to showcasing the land, animals, and people that make up Mendocino County. All Mendocino County residents and visitors are invited to participate. I like to think of myself as a reporter for the Average Joe. Journalism has become a craft defined largely by city dwellers on America's coasts. It’s time to take it back. I have been an Emerald Triangle resident since 2006 and this is year ten in Mendocino County. Please, email me at matthewplafever@gmail.com if you know a story that needs to be told.
