The California Highway Patrol Traffic Incident Information page indicates around 12:36 p.m. a big rig struck a utility pole along State Route 20 in Lake County after which the haul of hay it was transporting spilled in the roadway.
No injuries resulted from the incident but the westbound lane south of Lucerne was blocked due to the vehicle and its cargo.
Of note for anyone traveling on State Route 20, as of 3:08 p.m., the Caltrans Quickmap shows traffic has significantly slowed in the area of the incident.
A video of the incident sent to us by a resident surmised the incident could have been a result of the high winds in the area pushing the big rig, but that has not been confirmed by any official reports.
Please remember that this story is unfolding. Information is being reported as we gather it. However, some of the information coming from witnesses and initial official reports could be wrong. We will do our best to get the facts but, in the case that something is inaccurate, we will update with correct information as soon as we can.
Judging where it’s located it was probably a combination of speed, turns, and winds. Trucks and cars underestimate those turns by the elementary school all the time. That is right where the speed limit slows entering back into town so the truck easily could have been going a little too fast.
Hey is one of the most common overturn loads. Too high and often low experienced drivers.
