A confrontation between two men became violent on Sunday in Ukiah resulting in one stabbing the other and the arrest of 21-year-old Caleb Devine Gomes for assault with a deadly weapon.

Lieutenant Andrew Phillips of the Ukiah Police Department told us the incident began in the parking of Express Mart, a gas station and convenience store on the 900 block of South State Street.

Upon arrival, officers determined a “confrontation between two transients occurred.” The men separated, and Gomes reportedly “decided to come back and re-engage in the confrontation.”

Gomes, at that point, allegedly “produced a knife and during the argument he slashed the victim’s forehead, resulting in an approximate 1” long cut”, Lieutenant Phillips said. The victim would recieve medical treatment from responding paramedics.

After Gomes reportedly stabbed the victim, Lieutenant Phillips said he “left the area” and was located by officers in the area of Hertz Car Rental, a quarter-mile south of where the confrontation took place.

Gomes was booked into the Mendocino County Jail for felony assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm and as of this report, remains in custody.

It must be stated that the charges described have not been proven in a court of law. In accordance with the legal principle of the presumption of innocence, any individual described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty.
