On Friday, September 9, 2022, the smell of chili wafted from Ukiah’s Alex Thomas Plaza where 35 chili connoisseurs competed to be voted the best of the best at the 25th Annual Chili Cook Off hosted by Granite Construction.

The event benefitted the Boys and Girls Club of Ukiah filling bellies, and bringing friends and families together, who ultimately dubbed Ukiah’s Thirsty Axe The People’s Choice Champion of the Cook Off

Our photographer Peter Armstrong was there capturing the smiles and community as neighbors set aside their differences to celebrate their love for chili.

I like to think of myself as a reporter for the Average Joe. Journalism has become a craft defined largely by city dwellers on America's coasts. It’s time to take it back. I have been an Emerald Triangle resident since 2006 and this is year ten in Mendocino County. Please, email me at matthewplafever@gmail.com if you know a story that needs to be told.
