Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office Captain Greg Van Patten told us the dead body recovered from the Navarro River last night was an intoxicated man in his 50s whose death is being investigated as a “possible accidental drowning”.

The man, thus far unidentified, was swimming with a female friend yesterday near the mouth of the Navarro River where State Route 128 runs alongside the waterway. Captain Van Patten said he was heavily intoxicated and the female friend “left him at the river because she was unable to assist him to the car and sometime thereafter called the Sheriff’s Office requesting a welfare check on him.”

Upon arrival to the area, described as MPM 3 on Highway 128, deputies found him floating in the river and deceased.

The death is being investigated as an accidental drowning, but “no official cause and classification of death yet” Captain Van Patten explained. Part of the investigation will be a blood alcohol and toxicology analysis that will take several weeks to complete.
