Snow Falls on the Point Arena Pier

A layer of snow on the Point Arena Pier [Photograph sent to us by City Manager Paul Andersen]

Freezing temperatures, low-elevation snow, and high winds continue as this winter weather system batters the North Coast.

Yesterday evening, snow remarkably fell on the Point Arena pier.

A brief review of relevant newspaper archives and weather data indicates there are no other documented occurrences of snowfall on the Mendocino Coast landmark. Other snow storms have left the hills above Point Arena frosted with snow, but no records we found described the 330′ long pier covered in snow.

How about you Mendocino long-timers? Do you remember this happening? Let us know!

  1. It’s not snow, it’s hail the size of peas and garbanzo beans. It’s white out, I’m down the road and there’s thick hail everywhere. We had a slushee and made a hail man. ⛄️

I like to think of myself as a reporter for the Average Joe. Journalism has become a craft defined largely by city dwellers on America's coasts. It’s time to take it back. I have been an Emerald Triangle resident since 2006 and this is year ten in Mendocino County. Please, email me at matthewplafever@gmail.com if you know a story that needs to be told.
