Authorities Converging on Covelo After Dead Body Discovered in a Field

[Stock photo by Matt LaFever]

Tragic news out of Round Valley today after a dead body was located in a field prompting multiple agencies to respond to the scene.

The initial callout went out at 11:30 a.m. asking medical personnel to respond to the area of 76600 Highway 162 in Covelo for an “1144” confirmation, which means they were tasked with confirming a patient was deceased.

The specific location of the incident is muddled at this point. Initially, the body was reportedly found by a field near the Natural Resource Center, across from Biggar Lane. Later, the location was updated and described as a field behind a trailer park on Howard Street

California Highway Patrol, Fish and Game, Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office, and Round Valley Tribal Police personnel are either on their way to the scene or at the scene. One responding officer specifically asked those first in the area to take photographs, which could indicate an extended investigation is planned.

We have reached out to the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office and will update when more information is available.

    • It will end when the county DA and the legal industry cease allowing these career troublemakers to return here. One way to create a peaceful community is to stop the woke catch and release operation. Hand out prison time rather than low bail and parole. But it’s not just in Round Valley this issue of repeat offenders, but our once shining cities are having the same breakdown. The economy, fetal alcohol syndrome, a drug culture, and corrupt government. A couple generations of a downward spiral searching for the lowest common denominator. The center won’t hold. Prayers AND justice for family. And for Round Valley.

  1. You can blame the county da, you can blame the police, tribal included but it appears from looking over past cases that many are not 0rosecuted or remain in jail due to non cooperation from witnesses and those involved. It also appears that values are placed on certain victims…..and communities involvement in solving a case. Anonymous calls with pertinant info gave up this suspect…..while others that had numerous people present remain silent and cases go unresolved. Im sitting here wondering about body found this morning……were they involved? Will be interesting to find out..police, can only do so much when no one will talk, and until the community determines they had enough these crimes will continue. Speak up for those that deserve justice…..

    • You can also blame the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) and CPS that keeps putting children back in that community. As a former Social Worker assigned to Round Valley 12 years ago It makes me sick when I see kids I worked with now killing people, or getting killed. ICWA does not protect the children, it protects the tribes.

      • Thank goodness you are no longer a social worker. I am a product of ICWA, the trauma I endured in a non native home was horrendous. Don’t speak for Natives.

      • James Marmon, there is no such thing as a perfect solution to protecting abused and neglected children. Have you looked into the statistics of what happens to children that grow up striped of all connection to their heritage. The statics are horrific. ICWA is an attempt at preserving what is left of Native American Culture. ICWA is not the cause or the result of the anger and violence that is plaguing our young people.

  2. It was a child that was found beat to death today. Please have some respect. Pray for the poor girl that was taken to soon. R.I.P. little one. I will miss watching you play ball with my daughter 🙏🏼❤️

  3. Jesus a 16 year old girl!! What could a little girl have done to meet this end? Hopefully tribal elders will offer rewards like they did for Whipple killer.have the same outrage for the women who seem to take a backseat so any times. Protect your women.
The good residents of covelo need to work on taking back this community. Its just not kids killing kids, it
Seems to be a free for all. Relatives killing relatives and no one wants to speak up. What kind of person can sit down to a meal or attend a function next to a family whose child they murdered or witnessed? I’m not sure but it happens in covelo. Things will only get worse now….possible retaliation, people carrying weapons for protection that don’t know h o w to use them. It’s a scary part of the world there now.i am not into excuses for this crap happening…not child welfare..not police. It comes down to downright disrespect for life and those around you. I pray God intervenes and brings peace soon.

  4. Why isn’t people post pictures or saying like they did the Whipple boy ? Is it because their people did that to the young girl so know one saying anything . I’m confused treat the young lady like how their doing the young boy also it’s horrible for both where’s the reward money to get her people that did this . Where is her hashtag #justice

    • Immediately After the Whipple homicide elders demanded info……and tips identifying suspect by name and what occured and people called and gave info . So far with this little girl all they have done is declare a state of emergency against violence.. WTF does that mean…article states they will hold candlelight vigils and prayer meetings.. what good will that do? How about 10,000 reward for information like they did right after the Whipple murder. Granted she probably I s not the tribal elders niece, Whipple was his nephew but he did foster her for some time. Women are the future of the community. Fight for them

      • I don’t think he should have a input on anything when his NIECE is in custody for the young lady. Come on now people speak up .

    • A teacher…come on have some respect. You’re in the wrong profession, buddy. Watch what you say, because it could have easily happend to your family member. Instead of putting down your community on social media, go showy our face and let the community know what you’re doing to help besides wasting time adding fuel to the fire, you should be ashamed of yourself and
your negative input . Didn’t your parents teach you manners. If you don’t have anything nice to say, DON’T.

  5. Under the Major Crimes Act of 1885. look it up. This law allows the Federal Govt to have jurisdiction on an Indian Reservation when a crime by a native against a native occurs. This means that because this Act was in place long before Public Law 280 ( 1951?) It has precedent meaning it has authority above Public Law 280 ( which allows the state to handle investigations presence and adjudication( prosecution by state court. Since the whole of the criminal justice system is corrupt( parts still under investigation.) The Tribal Nation has the authority to call in the Fed govt as well as the State Attorney General to shut down Mendocino County for their pathological lawlessness when dealing with Covelo tribal citizens
