The Potter Valley Rodeo: 77 Years of Wrangling, Racing, and Bucking

[All photographs by Peter Armstrong]

This weekend, hundreds filled the Potter Valley Rodeo Grounds for the 77th annual Potter Valley Spring Festival and Rodeo.

Though the world has changed dramatically in 77 years, the Potter Valley rodeo has not. Cowboys and cowgirls competed to see who is the best bull rider or barrel racer. Attendees battled it out to see who was the best in axe throwing or wood cutting.

Check out photographer Peter Armstrong’s highlights from this weekend’s flashback to an Old West past that happened in Mendo’s own backyard:

I like to think of myself as a reporter for the Average Joe. Journalism has become a craft defined largely by city dwellers on America's coasts. It’s time to take it back. I have been an Emerald Triangle resident since 2006 and this is year ten in Mendocino County. Please, email me at matthewplafever@gmail.com if you know a story that needs to be told.
