Law enforcement and emergency personnel are converging on the southbound lanes of Highway 101 between Ukiah’s Perkins Street and Gobbi Street where a reported dead body is lying in the roadway.

Scanner traffic indicates emergency personnel have confirmed a subject is deceased and are redirecting traffic to diminish traffic in the area.

Law enforcement is establishing traffic control along Highway 101 South and has closed the southbound on-ramp to Highway 101 from Perkins Street.

An eyewitness reported personnel from the Ukiah Police Department, California Highway Patrol, and the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office were on the scene.

Ukiah CHP published the following update on their Facebook page.

UPDATE 2:33 p.m. California Highway Patrol Officer Alex Kimball told us the fatality along Highway 101 this afternoon was the result of a shooting that occurred after CHP officers conducted a traffic stop. Initially, the subject was pulled over by law enforcement suspected of being a Be-On-the-Lookout subject from Pacifica. Officer Kimball could not confirm an officer fired their weapon but said the “traffic stop resulted in a shooting.”

UPDATE 4:51 p.m.: As of 4:40 p.m., Highway 101’s southbound lanes appear to have cleared and an officer reported over the scanner they were opening the roadway. Traffic is flowing relatively smoothly as of 4:41 p.m.

  1. Thank you for your awesome report Matt hopefully for more developed story. I’ve been driving pass The bridge over 101 on Perkins around 2:13pm and was wondering what was going on since all the traffic was backed up all the way.
