The Post Office in the Northern Mendocino County town of Leggett is on reportedly fire this evening after being struck by lightning.
A firefighter at scene reported a structure nearby is actively being threatened.
The initial dispatch regarding the structure fire came out around 5:44 p.m. indicating a fire was burning inside Leggett Post Office located at 67674 Highway 271.
The reporting party told dispatch the fire ignited after the structure was struck by lightning.
UPDATE 6:16 p.m.: Information provided by a Leggett resident and corroborated by the California Highway Patrol Traffic Incident Information page indicates the lightning struck a redwood tree causing it to fall into the post office which caused the structure fire.
UPDATE 6:44 p.m.: The Incident Commander reported the fire was contained and the threat to nearby structures had been successfully mitigated. Crews are now in the mop up phase and the Incident Commander estimated they would be on scene for several hours.
