On Wednesday, February 14, 2024, the Leggett Valley Unified School Board took action to temporarily cease operations of the Mendocino Adventure Ropes Course (“MARC”) until an entity presents a new business plan with independent and self-sustaining financial responsibility.

MARC is a non-profit business that operates an adventure ropes obstacle course on land owned by the District. The business has been operating under the auspices of the Leggett Valley Unified School District (“District”) since its inception in 1995.

Historically, MARC required minimal financial contribution and oversight from the District. MARC previously had the underwriting and support from outside state and community organizations, some of which dried up during the 2008 California fiscal crisis (The Great Recession). While MARC continues to solicit donations from outside organizations, it is no longer a self-sustaining non-profit and has been operating at a loss for the past few years.  The District is not able to assume the additional financial and administrative responsibilities required to sustain MARC operations.

Mendocino Adventure Ropes Course has been a highlight of our school community bringing children and adults from all over the county for many years.  We sincerely hope that MARC can have a successful and sustainable reopening in the future enhancing the lives of adventurers for many years to come.

If you or anyone you know is interested in operating an outdoor adventure course in the gorgeous redwoods of northern Mendocino County, please contact Superintendent Sierra Lahera for information on how to submit your business proposal.

  1. I used to put on courses like this for Boy Scouts.
    Builds confidence and self reliance.
Apparently that is not important to school district.
