The Ukiah Municipal Airport recorded tied historic high temperatures on both Tuesday and Wednesday this week, according to the National Weather Service.

On July 2, the temperature reached 110 degrees Fahrenheit, matching the record set in 1924. On July 3, the thermometer climbed to 112 degrees, equaling the high set in 1931.

Mendocino County has been grappling with an intense heat wave, with some areas reaching blistering temperatures of up to 112 degrees. This oppressive heat is forecasted to continue, with predictions indicating that Ukiah, Redwood Valley, and other inland areas will experience average highs of 107 degrees throughout the coming week.

The National Weather Service Eureka (NWS Eureka) has prolonged its excessive heat warning for southeastern interior Mendocino County until 8 p.m. Monday. This alert includes Ukiah, Hopland, Talmage, Calpella, and Redwood Valley, and also extends to Clearlake, Middletown, and Lakeport in neighboring Lake County.

With the extreme heat, the risk of heat-related illnesses rises significantly. Residents are urged to take precautions and can find a list of cooling centers available in the county below.

  1. September 28, 1936 : “The fire seared coasts of southern Oregon and northern California smoked like a battlefield today”. (Jefferson City Post-Tribune Missouri).

The 1930’s dust bowl decade still has temperature records holding today. The late 1800’s saw a series of heat waves, also. During the Medieval Warm Period Vikings settled in Greenland and later froze to death when the warming ended.

  2. I wonder what the all-time hottest temperature ever recorded in Ukiah is. I’m pretty sure we broke it today. It was 119° on my porch. And 119° at the airport. In my entire life the hottest temperature I remember is 117° and I was born here. 1975. And I lived most of my life here.
