Mendocino County voters have overwhelmingly approved a special benefit assessment to fund the Sherwood Road Zone of Benefit Pilot Program, ensuring dedicated support for the Willits Creek and Firco Emergency Access Routes (EARs).

On May 21, the Board passed a resolution to establish this assessment for the Willits Creek and Firco EARs, located in Brooktrails, Spring Creek, Sylvandale, and Gates Subdivisions. During a public hearing on July 23, property owners voiced their opinions, resulting in 64% voting in favor—6,680 “YES” votes to 3,738 “NO” votes.

Starting fiscal year 2024-25, the 20-year assessment will appear on tax rolls, charging $30.33 per developed parcel and $1.39 per undeveloped parcel. Funds will address immediate road repairs, drainage improvements, culvert maintenance, and installation of new gates and turnouts, aligning with California fire safety standards. It also ensures ongoing maintenance like firebreak upkeep and road surfacing.

This plan, in the works for five and a half years, aims to keep 4.3 miles of FirCo Road and Willits Creek Trail accessible for fire engines. These private, unpaved roads needed easement agreements with property owners for emergency use.

With an estimated $120,000 needed over the next decade for culvert and gate work, this assessment is a crucial step.

“Passing this assessment is a major step toward a safer community,” said John Haschak, 3rd District Supervisor. “This team effort involved property owners, the Sherwood Firewise Community, Brooktrails Township CSD, and Mendocino County staff. I’m proud of the collaboration and dedication from everyone involved.”
