On 09/12/2024 at approximately 2:30pm, Ukiah Police Department (UPD) Officers were dispatched to The  Great Redwood Trail between East Gobbi Street and Cleveland Lane regarding a bicycle accident. Upon arrival,  UPD Officers learned that a 53-year-old male from Ukiah had succumbed to injures resulting from a single-person bicycle crash.

Witnesses told us the male was traveling southbound on an electric bicycle at an extremely high rate of speed. The front wheel of the electric bicycle collided with an object left on the trail, causing the electric bicycle to crash and the male to fall off. The male was wearing a helmet, but it was not secured tightly and the male suffered head trauma from the accident.

This is an ongoing fatal traffic accident investigation which is being investigated by the designated UPD Traffic  Officer, with assistance from the UPD Detective Bureau. The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office responded and will be investigating the Coroner’s Case.

Ukiah Valley Fire Authority personnel and a member of the Mendocino County District Attorney’s Office  Investigations Bureau also assisted UPD in this investigation.

As always, UPD’s mission is to make Ukiah as safe as possible. If you would like to know more about crime in  your neighborhood, you can sign up for telephone, cellphone, and email notifications by clicking the Nixle  button on our website; www.ukiahpolice.com.

      • That is awful ? very saddening. And as for the comment of Faron the Moron. Very inappropriate seems Faron is an ignorant person. I read an article about stupid ignorant people are unaware that they are Stupid and ignorant Faron is insensitive to some one losing there life in a tragic accident there is nothing funny about that Faron my suggestion is get help you need mental health treatment if death is joke . We do not need your comments on local news especially someone who passed . Capisce Punk

  1. Seriously? Did you comment on the wrong article? I’m gonna give you the benefit of the doubt, cuz that would be so cruel and heartless of a human to “laugh out loud” at someone else’s tragedy.

The book of James 2:13 says; because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment

  2. Matt, thanks for bringing us this info. The only questions I have (because I use that section of the trail) is who was this person, what was the object he/she hit, how fast was “extremely fast”…?

  3. My condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

This “Trail” is going to be the end for many. Especially when this gets completed and folks have an accident or a medical emergency in areas that have zero cellphone service and getting help to them will take hours not minutes.

The politicians who have been on board with this will definitely have some blood on their hands and I doubt this “Trail” will be bringing in the $$$$ they have said it would to neighboring communities.

    So sorry this has happened.

    • I ride my bike in the Jackson Demonstration Forest every weekend, where I also lack cell service and could suffer an accident resulting in a medical emergency. Guess we should just close those off, too? While we’re at it, lets just prevent any further expansion of any activities that could prevent danger, right? No more fun in the USA, it’s too dangerous…

The issue appears to be that the deceased didn’t attach their helmet properly. It’s not the fact we have a public bike trail.

      • Wasn’t saying close everything off. Just stating that I do not think that these Politicians have truly thought all this through. Also I know of folks whose land is being taken for this “Trail”. How fair is that?

Sorry, if I have safety concerns for folks that will be on this “Trail” in the future.

Have a great time doing your thing.

  4. Life is so fragile, every moment of every day is a “gift” that’s why it is called the “present”. May we use each moment for good and not evil, to make the world around us a better place, starting at home. It’s never too late for any of us to take this advice. Every day is a fresh start and God’s mercies are brand new each and every morning.
Refer to Lamentations 3:22-23 Holy Bible.

Condolences to this fellow human, may he/she rest in peace. Prayers for their family and friends. May God be with you today and always.
