SFGATE: How a giant cowboy became a Willits icon

Reporting on Cowboy Willy was a blast! This 20-foot cowboy has been the face of Willits’ Frontier Days since 1967, and digging into his history revealed how much he’s become a beloved local icon. Originally a “Muffler Man,” Willy was transformed by the town into a symbol of pride. From his cowboy hat to the custom paint job, he’s more than just a statue — he’s part of Willits’ spirit.

It was incredible learning about the hands-on restoration work that brought Willy back to life in 2013 and the community effort to get him a companion for the town’s centennial. Cowboy Willy is more than a roadside attraction; he’s a living, breathing part of Willits’ identity.
