Authorities have identified the man who died in law enforcement custody last week as 29-year-old Emil Redzic of Ukiah, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday.

Redzic was pronounced dead at Adventist Health Ukiah Valley on the night of Feb. 26 after being taken into custody near Orr Creek. Law enforcement had encountered him earlier that evening while investigating a 911 hang-up call at a Brush Street apartment complex. He reportedly fled from deputies before later being found near the creek, where he was uncooperative and exhibited signs of a medical emergency, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies administered multiple doses of Narcan and performed life-saving measures before paramedics transported Redzic to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Due to the circumstances, the Mendocino County Officer-Involved Fatal Incident Protocol was enacted, and an investigation is ongoing.

An autopsy was performed Monday, but officials say the official cause and manner of death remain pending further forensic testing.

Anyone with information about the case is urged to contact the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office at 707-463-4086 or provide anonymous tips at 707-234-2100.

  1. Thanks Matt for following up on this and sharing this info. This is such a tragedy. Somebody’s son, brother, uncle, grandson, nephew, friend.

I didn’t know him but I’m heartbroken. But for the grace of God there go I. God helped me get free from all my addictions to meth, pills, gambling, cigs, etc. Or I might be dead and ….PRAY people! Jesus loves you and wants to help you. I love you.
