A 72-year-old man reported missing from the Mendocino Coast has been found dead, authorities confirmed Thursday.
The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office identified the deceased as Daniel Jay Salmond of Albion. His body was discovered on March 4 by Search and Rescue teams following a four-day search effort involving multiple agencies.
Salmond, who suffered from dementia, was last seen at his Middle Ridge Road home on Feb. 27. He was reported missing on March 1 when an in-home care worker found he was gone.
An autopsy was performed Wednesday, March 5, but officials say the cause and manner of death remain pending further forensic testing. No foul play is suspected.

Rest in Peace Dan. We remember Dan as a devoted husband to Julia and as a great plant person.

So sad. And so preventable. After he was reported missing numerous people commented that they saw him walking along the road clearly inappropriately dressed for weather and night. People that knew him or of him….but no one stopped to see if he needed help. Sundowning is common in dementia patients and late afternoon and early evenings are extremely hard on them mentally. We can do better we have to do better.
