Residents along California’s North Coast will have the opportunity to test their tsunami preparedness during the annual North Coast Tsunami Drill on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at approximately 11:00 a.m.
The Mendocino County Office of Emergency Services, in coordination with Humboldt and Del Norte Counties, the National Weather Service, and the Redwood Coast Tsunami Work Group, is organizing the event to help coastal communities practice their emergency response strategies in the event of a real tsunami.
As part of the drill, a MendoAlert message will be sent to all coastal communities, prompting residents in low-lying tsunami hazard zones to practice their evacuation plans. Those outside the hazard zones are encouraged to review and practice earthquake safety procedures, which include the widely recognized “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” technique.
This year’s drill will not include a test of the tsunami sirens.
Residents interested in participating can register for the drill at MendoReady.org. Additionally, tsunami hazard maps can be accessed through the Redwood Coast Tsunami Work Group or by visiting the “Know Your Hazards” section on MendoReady.
With the North Coast’s history of seismic activity, officials emphasize the importance of regular preparedness exercises to ensure communities remain ready for potential tsunamis.
