A simple speeding violation on North Main Street led Fort Bragg police to arrest a man wanted for a serious sex crime out of San Mateo County, according to a press release issued by the Fort Bragg Police Department.

Just before 9:30 p.m. on May 12, an officer conducting traffic enforcement in downtown Fort Bragg clocked a northbound vehicle going 41 mph in a 25 mph zone near the 200 block of North Main Street. The officer initiated a traffic stop and identified the driver as Juan Yepez Pena, 32, of Lathrop, California.

A records check revealed Yepez Pena had a felony warrant from 2019 issued in Menlo Park for alleged violation of California Penal Code 285(i) — sodomy without consent involving drugs or alcohol, police said. He was arrested on the outstanding warrant and cited for speeding.

Yepez Pena was transported to Mendocino County Jail. Fort Bragg police noted that he had no prior contacts with their department.

“This type of proactive law enforcement 24 hours a day is what helps keep our community safe,” Fort Bragg Police Chief Neil Cervenka said in the press release. “What began as a traffic safety stop turned into the capture of a person wanted for a serious felony driving through our city.”

It is important to note that while Yepez Pena has been arrested in connection with this felony warrant, the allegations have not been proven in a court of law. All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
