A pedestrian was struck and killed Thursday afternoon by a pickup truck on U.S. Highway 101 in Sonoma County, according to a press release issued by the California Highway Patrol’s Santa Rosa office.
The incident occurred around 2:33 p.m. on the southbound side of the highway, just south of Westside Road, the CHP said. Preliminary findings indicate the man had been walking along the right shoulder before he suddenly turned left into the active traffic lane, where a Ford F-150 hit him.
According to the CHP, the driver of the Ford stopped immediately and remained at the scene, fully cooperating with officers during the investigation.
Southbound lanes of the highway were closed shortly after the crash, and traffic was diverted onto Westside Road. One lane reopened within an hour, and both lanes were fully cleared by approximately 4:33 p.m., the CHP reported.
The identity of the deceased man has not yet been released. The Sonoma County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office will handle the release of his name, according to the CHP.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Santa Rosa CHP office at (707) 806-5600.
