Stumbling upon the Tallman Hotel in Upper Lake felt like discovering a real hidden gem — the kind of place that instantly makes you rethink everything you thought you knew about Lake County. This 151-year-old hotel, lovingly preserved and reimagined by new owners Amar and Rajvi Alapati, reminded me that Lake County has way more to offer than people give it credit for. It’s easy to write off this area based on old reputations, but spots like the Tallman prove there’s a passionate community here, working hard to show the world a different side of the county.
What really struck me was the heart behind the hotel. The Alapatis didn’t come in trying to wipe the slate clean — they’re building on what the Butchers started, keeping the charm and character while expanding the vision. They see Lake County as more than a quick stop on the way to Napa or Mendocino. They see it as a destination in its own right, full of natural beauty, history, and potential. And honestly? I couldn’t agree more.
Finding the Tallman and meeting the people behind it gave me a real sense of hope for the region. Lake County has its challenges, sure — but it also has folks who care deeply, who are putting their money, time, and energy into making it better. This experience reminded me that under the surface, there’s a lot of grit, soul, and love here. Lake County deserves a second look — and places like the Tallman are leading the way.

The Tallman Hotel is a great example of Tom Carter’s renovation work. It is indeed a jewel in Lake County. I can’t wait to see what he does with the Palace Hotel in Ukiah.
