A Fort Bragg man is in jail after allegedly opening fire on his roommate during a late-night altercation last week, according to a press release from the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were dispatched at around 10:28 p.m. on May 22 to a residence on the 17000 block of North Highway 1 in Fort Bragg after 23-year-old Jeremy Segura called 911, reporting he believed his roommate had shot at him. Segura identified the alleged shooter as 39-year-old Saysomone Manyphone, also of Fort Bragg, the release states.

When deputies arrived, Segura exited the home and was found to be uninjured. Unsure if Manyphone was still inside, law enforcement made several announcements but received no response. Deputies discovered that Manyphone’s vehicle was no longer at the scene, and during a preliminary sweep of the home, they found signs that a firearm had been discharged, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators obtained a search warrant and uncovered additional evidence indicating a violent assault with a firearm had occurred. Despite searching through the early hours of May 23, deputies were unable to locate Manyphone. Authorities emphasized there was no ongoing threat to the public, describing the event as an isolated incident.

Later that day, at approximately 6:24 p.m., the Fort Bragg Police Department received a tip about Manyphone’s whereabouts. Officers located and detained him in the 300 block of North Main Street. Deputies then arrested Manyphone on suspicion of assault with a firearm and using a firearm during the commission of a serious felony, per the press release.

Manyphone was booked into the Mendocino County Jail and is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.

  1. Let’s be clear. The guy shoots at his roommate. The gun wasn’t found at the scene. Manyphone had fled the scene, armed, scared and making bad choices. How does this equate to no threat to the public? When he shoots at someone else, harms or kills them, does the Fort Bragg PD owe anyone an apology or restitution for their misplaced assurance? In other cases, when an armed fugitive is on the run we get a NIXL alert letting us know it’s better to stay indoors until the potential threat is dealt with. Only time will tell if this was a sloppy, costly decision. From my civilian standpoint, this appears precarious at best. Matt, thanks for bringing this to our attention.
