Ukiah’s largest street and utility makeover in years is entering the home stretch. The Urban Core Rehabilitation and Transportation Project (UCRT)—a sweeping upgrade of Main, Gobbi, and Perkins Streets—will enter its final stages this month, according to a press release from the City of Ukiah.

Construction crews will begin full-depth reconstruction and paving on West Gobbi Street between State and Dora Streets starting June 9, forcing a full weekday closure through June 13 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. While intersections at Dora and State will remain open, drivers should expect intermittent detours and are urged to use caution around construction workers and pedestrians, the city stated.

Residents along the corridor will be able to access their driveways only outside of work hours and are advised to park elsewhere during the day.

East Gobbi Street will follow next, with paving tentatively scheduled to begin the week of June 23. To minimize disruption, the City of Ukiah noted that night work may be used to accelerate progress. Before that, a final water utility tie-in near Orchard Avenue is planned for the night of June 12, and residents will receive 72-hour notice ahead of any outages.

After Gobbi is complete, crews will turn their focus to Main Street between Norton and Gobbi for reconstruction and paving. Meanwhile, Perkins Street work kicks off June 16, starting with potholing to locate underground utilities. Upgrades on Perkins include a new eastbound lane between Orchard Avenue and the Pear Tree Center, storm drain improvements, concrete work, and upgraded traffic signals, according to the release.

Much of the UCRT is funded by state and federal grants. Once finished, the project will improve safety, access, and infrastructure resiliency throughout Ukiah’s busiest corridors.
