Just south of Elk, a coastal gem called Sea Arches just hit the market for $7.5 million. The 20-acre estate sits on a bluff overlooking the Pacific, complete with a private sea stack island, two miles of trails, and a rope-assisted descent to a secluded beach. The home itself is wrapped in glass walls to soak in the views, and the layout was designed to balance luxury with livability. Sotheby’s agent Kevin McDonald told SFGATE that properties like this “don’t come around very often,” and building something similar now would be nearly impossible due to coastal regulations.
As someone who covers Mendocino County regularly, I’m always struck by the contrast. We’re a county grappling with budget shortfalls, shuttered services, and struggling small towns—yet dotted throughout the wildlands are places like this, where the ultra-wealthy carve out retreats most locals will never step foot on. It’s a surreal reminder of the two Mendocinos: one fighting to keep the lights on, the other basking in million-dollar views.
