The streets of Ukiah will once again fill with color, song, and movement on Friday, June 20, as Indivisible Ukiah and Community Action Alliance present the Ukiah Pride March and ResistDance, a celebration of Pride Month and a rallying cry for inclusion, love, and resistance.
According to a press release issued by the event organizers, the festivities will begin at 6:00 p.m. with a rally at Alex Thomas Plaza on South State Street. From there, the community will march to the Mendocino County Courthouse, where a DJ dance party and speeches will cap off the evening.
Now in its 23rd year, Mendocino County’s annual LGBTIQA2S+ Pride celebration continues a tradition that began in 2002 with a joint Mendocino-Lake County event organized entirely by volunteers. The ResistDance element—emphasizing joy as a form of protest—reflects a renewed commitment to visibility and resistance in the face of ongoing national political pushback. As stated in the press release, “keeping love and joy at the forefront of Pride events is important.”
The Raging Grannies of Mendocino will be on hand to energize marchers with rousing chants and songs, leading the sidewalk procession through downtown in the spirit of the first Pride marches held in 1970, just a year after the Stonewall Rebellion in New York City.
The event is a grassroots effort made possible because “individuals from two ally groups stepped up to make sure a June event happens in Ukiah this year,” the organizers emphasized. With Indivisible Ukiah and Community Action Alliance co-sponsoring, the march underscores the critical role of allies when marginalized communities face threats at the federal level.
More details about the event can be found on the groups’ social media pages, and updates on additional Pride events around the county are available through the Mendo Pride Facebook page.
