The Mendocino Unit of CAL FIRE will carry out a 10-acre prescribed burn on the Shamrock Ranch southeast of Laytonville this Thursday, June 19, between 6 p.m. and midnight, according to a press release from the agency. The operation will target chaparral and understory vegetation within oak woodland and mixed conifer habitats, creating a patchwork of burned and unburned areas to reduce wildfire risk.

CAL FIRE said the project is part of the state’s broader effort to meet fuels reduction goals outlined in the California Fire Plan and the California Wildfire and Forest Resilience Action Plan.

The Shamrock Ranch is located in northern Mendocino County, east of Highway 101 and southeast of Laytonville. Smoke and aircraft may be visible during the burn, which will be conducted under “strictly controlled weather and fuel conditions,” the agency said.
