At 11:50 last night, the CHP learned of a crash that killed a 17-year-old youth near Covelo in Mendocino County. According to Sgt. Matt Harvey, the young male was “traveling eastbound on State Route 162 approaching the intersection at Biggar Lane.” He was alone in the vehicle.
Harvey said that as the red Ford F150 was approaching the intersection, the pickup veered to the right and collided into an iron fence and then into a wooden utility pole. “[The teenager] was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced deceased at the scene,” the sergeant told us.
At this point, Harvey explained, it is unknown if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.

The direction that the truck was traveling according to this report is not making sense to me. Hwy. 162 runs North/South until it is well past Biggar Lane (which runs East/West), then 162 turns East at the four corners by the Forest Service office, heading for the Pass. The road continues North there as Zenia Road.
