According to a press release from the California Highway Patrol, an 80-year-old Ukiah man died on Sunday evening when his Mazda Miata overturned after colliding with a rock embankment on Highway 253.
The press release indicates that the collision occurred at 6:34 p.m. after the “Mazda traveled over the double yellow lines into the opposing lane.” The vehicle corrected, reentered the eastbound, lane then left the roadway and “collided with the dirt/rock embankment,” as per the press release. This collision resulted in the vehicle to “overturn onto its roof” after which it came to rest off of Highway 253.
The driver’s name has been withheld until next-of-kin has been notified.
The CHP press release says the collision remains under investigation and has yet to be determined whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the collision.
