[WARNING: Graphic Images]Humboldt County Sheriff’s Investigating Possible Human Remains Discovered Near Field’s Landing Yesterday Afternoon

Categories:

Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office deputies were at the Field’s Landing Boat Ramp yesterday afternoon after a pair of beachcombers discovered and reported what they believe to be human remains.

A Humboldt County woman told us she was on the beach with her friend “looking for old bottles and seashells” around 5:30 p.m. The pair walked north from the Field’s Landing boat launch passing Connell Organics Incorporated enjoying their afternoon.

The approximate location of the human remains

The tone of the beach wander quickly shifted when they spotted what looked like a cracked rib bone below the high tide line. Taking an inventory of the surrounding mud, the pair realized they could see several rib bones, a pelvic bone, a forearm, a femur, smaller pieces of unidentifiable bone, and what they took as a human skull. The Humboldt County woman said the bones were scattered approximately across the mud taking up an area “about the size of half a tennis court.”

The woman told us after they found the skull, “We knew right away it was a person, without a doubt.”

The pair decided to contact law enforcement and were directed by the dispatcher to stay in the area and flag down responding officers when they arrived. Initially, three Humboldt County Sheriff deputies arrived on the scene and the woman told us “didn’t take it seriously until they saw the skull.” By the time the sun was setting, five deputies had arrived at the scene and the Sheriff/Coroner’s truck had as well.

The woman was shaken from the experience saying, “I have never seen anything like that before.”
