At approximately 7:26 p.m. scanner traffic indicated a customer at Hopland’s Food and Gas Station was told by the cashier to contact the police because the store was being robbed. Moments later the dispatcher reported a panic alarm had been activated. Both Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office and California Highway Patrol responded to the business and took the suspected robber into custody.
Initial reports described the suspect as a dark-skinned 20-something wearing dark clothing and white socks and potentially under the influence. The reporting party was unsure whether the suspect was armed with a weapon.
When this reporter reached the scene, the suspect emerged from the gas station, sat on the stairs leading up to the entrance, smoked a cigarette, and conversed with bystanders.
When law enforcement arrived, the suspect put his hands in the air and seemingly cooperated as three deputies approached.
Deputies with the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Department handcuffed the suspect and took him away.
