Preliminary Information Emerges About Man Found Dead Behind Ukiah’s Ross Dress for Less

Categories:

Last night at approximately 9:30, Ukiah Police Department Officers were dispatched to the area behind Ukiah’s Ross Dress for Less in the Pear Tree Shopping Center on Perkins and Orchard regarding a man deceased in the area. A decedent was located and a coroner was called to the scene.

Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office Captain Greg Van Patten told us this morning that the decedent is a 43-year-old homeless male that is “known to law enforcement.”

Despite scanner traffic from last night that the next-of-kin had been notified, Captain Van Patten said his agency could not release the decedent’s identity until they had reached out to next-of-kin.

Captain Van Patten said the decedent has a history of substance abuse but there were “no obvious signs of such at the scene of his death to my knowledge.”

Ukiah Police Department came to investigate the circumstance after another homeless person found the man deceased and reported it, Captain Van Patten told us.

When asked whether there were any suspicious aspects of the man’s death, Captain Van Patten said “nothing is obviously suspicious and the results of the autopsy should be the deciding indicator.” He added the autopsy is scheduling for this Wednesday, August 25, 2021.
