First Case of COVID-19 BA.2 Subvariant Detected in Mendocino County

Categories:

The following is a press release issued by Mendocino County Public Health:

MendoCOVIDFeature

Public Health has confirmed a positive case of the Omicron Subvariant BA.2 in Mendocino County.

The original Omicron Variant is still the most common form of COVID-19 in California, but cases of a sub-variant, BA.2, have been increasing across the state since January 2022. The County has just been notified of the first local case of this variant dated to early March.

This variant can re-infect those who’ve had Omicron, and some people who have been vaccinated. In California and other places with high vaccination rates, BA.2 does not seem to be driving increases in rates of cases, hospitalizations, or deaths. This variant does have the potential to cause severe disease for the vulnerable and unvaccinated individuals, while those who have been vaccinated and boosted are still very well protected against severe disease from BA.2.

So now is a good opportunity for everyone to review the latest guidance around reducing COVID risk:

  1. Masks are strongly recommended in public indoor settings.
  2. Get vaccinated and get boosted. It is the best protection against severe COVID.
  3. Stay home from work and school when sick, get tested early.
  4. Increase outdoor activities and ventilation indoors.

Public Health will continue to analyze test results and monitor the number of BA.2 cases carefully. While we remain optimistic due to decreasing case and hospitalization rates in Mendocino, we are concerned that another variant could set us back to surge levels in the
future.

Free vaccines and booster shots continue to be available at primary care providers,
pharmacies, and at the County’s fixed and pop-up clinics. More information is available at

  1. So I was told there is no way to tell what variant someone has. So with that being said how do we know this and are we sure it’s not one of the 52 other things that can lead to a false positive? I mean really this is getting really old.

  2. Meanwhile it has been discovered that most of us could have micro-plastics in our blood. Opioid related deaths are at an all time high, more deaths than from Covid in the last two years.

“This variant does have the potential to cause severe disease for the vulnerable and unvaccinated individuals”

Has the “potential”. Nobody around the globe is saying this. Just like with the original Omnicron, not deadly. You could say almost anything could have the “potential” to cause harm to anyone. More fear BS. Newsflash, we have all moved on from the Covid situation. People are packing sports arenas all over the country, time to move on. I am far more concerned and take real active steps in my life to limit my exposure to harmful chemicals and pollution. Still don’t know anyone that has died from Covid. I personally know a number of people that have been killed by cancer in the last few years. What’s the real public health threat?

  3. Having had a person close to me die recently from suspected Covid related causes, I can testify to the dangers of this disease. Rationalization will get you nowhere. Our loved one claimed she had no co-morbidities, when she had several, and her doctors never said her stroke was possibly brought on by long Covid , even though Covid, or long Covid is a known hazard for stroke. There is more NOT coming out about Covid than being over-reported, thanks to an unscientific, denier attitude. I miss the person we lost, and wish we could have convinced her to be more careful. It was a shock for everyone. Don’t let it happen to you.

  4. “2. Get vaccinated and get boosted. It is the best protection against severe COVID.” bravo sierra to that.
