The following is a press release issued by Mendocino College:
The Mendocino College Art Gallery is proud to announce a new exhibition “Students Respond to the Figure,” opening on November 17th, 2022, with a reception on December 1st from 4:00-6:00pm. Light refreshments will be served. Regular gallery hours are Tuesdays 12:00-3:00pm, Wednesdays 3:00-6:00pm, Thursdays 12:00-3:00pm, and by appointment.
The exhibition represents an exciting cross-section of student work from adjunct faculty member Jazzminh Moore’s Portrait Painting and Figure Drawing classes. “Much of our time in Figure Drawing and Portrait Painting class is spent learning the basic building blocks of drawing and painting the figure,” said Jazzminh Moore. “Every once in a while, however, a student ventures into subjective terrain, inspired by free choice or a previously learned process. This show is a cross-section of student work with a special interest in those unique, inspired moments.” She continues, “A new student will pick up brightly colored chalk to do gesture drawings, dive into a conte crayon drawing in a novel way or explore the positive/negative shape created by simple white chalk on a black mat board. Accomplished students with countless hours of practice from previous institutions and art academies will bring that knowledge to Figure Drawing class and apply it in a new way. One artist painted her portrait with bits of fabric. The cross-pollination between young and seasoned, novice mark-making and mastery, is exciting to cultivate here in the Mendocino College Art Department.”
Special interest is given to inspired works that go beyond basic formal technique and/or venture into more subjective terrain, with 20 students from diverse backgrounds participating in the exhibition. “I have also included a few of my own works in the exhibition,” said Moore. “As well as a number of demonstration drawings, to o?er the public a glimpse into the learning process.”
