As of 7:00 a.m. this morning, both directions of Highway 101 between Willits and Redwood Valley are closed this morning due to heavy snow.
There is talk of Caltrans providing escort vehicles to guide drivers through the hazardous conditions, but as of 7:21 units on the scene are describing the roadway as closed.
There are reports of multiple drivers stuck in the snow. The closure runs from Haehl Creek Bridge to Uva Drive and is estimated to reopen at 12:00 p.m. today.
The California Highway Patrol Traffic Incident Information page indicates other areas of Mendocino County were inundated with snow overnight including Brooktrails, Laytonville
UPDATE 7:46 a.m.: As the full impacts of the storm are being realized, local road closures are growing. Caltrans has requested Highway 101 be closed from Garberville to Reynolds Highway (just north of Willits) as they attempt to clear the roadway.
Also, Highway 1 between Rockport and Leggett has closed.
UPDATE 8:59 a.m.:
Caltrans reports: U.S. 101 (pm 11.1) in Humboldt County is fully CLOSED from Sprowl Creek in Garberville, to Uva Drive in Redwood Valley in Mendocino County (pm 33) due to snow. Sherwood Road, the main thoroughfare in and out of Brooktrails is closed.
Other closures include State Route 20 between Fort Bragg and Willits, State Route 253 between Ukiah and Boonville, State Route 128 from Cloverdale to Boonville, and State Route 175 between Hopland and Lakeport.
UPDATE 11:50 a.m.: The Ridgewood Grade stretch of Highway 101 between Willits and Redwood Valley has reopened to thru traffic.
UPDATE 1:00 p.m.:
Highway 101, from Redwood Valley to Garberville, has reopened, as has State Route 253 from its junction with State Route 128 to Ukiah.
Mendocino County closures still in place include:
- State Route 1 between Rockport and Leggett
- State Route 20 from Fort Bragg to Willits
- State Route 128 between Yorkville and Boonville
- State Route 175 between Hopland and Lakeport
- State Route 271 near Ebert lane due to downed trees.
Highway 20 is now closed between Willits and the James Creek bridge.
Closed between Redwood Valley and Garberville. The high hills have too much snow and spin outs blocking the roads.
