Ukiah Unified School District is thrilled to report that Jim Evans has accepted the Principal position at Grace Hudson Language Academy, effective July 1, 2023. Mr. Evans has 19 years of educational experience and served as an elementary and middle school teacher at Oak Manor Elementary, Pomolita Middle School, and Grace Hudson Language Academy. Additionally, Jim was an assistant principal at Pomolita Middle School and is currently the principal at Jefferson Elementary School in Cloverdale, CA.
Mr. Evans is deeply committed to biliteracy, bilingualism, and dual-immersion education, and he credits this passion as the driving force for his return to the Ukiah Unified team. “I want to empower our kids with the knowledge to value their languages and to be proud that they are bilingual and biliterate,” said Evans. “My passion is elementary education, and I believe it’s the easiest and most efficient place to make changes for students academically, socially, and emotionally.”
Evans majored in Spanish and Anthropology at Humboldt State University and is bilingual and biliterate. He earned his Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Sonoma State University, where he also earned his Multiple Subject Teaching and Administrative Services Credentials. Before becoming a teacher, Mr. Evans worked as a Microsoft Certified Systems engineer and trainer.
“I have had the privilege of teaching for a vast majority of my career in Ukiah, and I am excited to return to this welcoming community and be closer to my family. Ukiah is home for me, and Grace Hudson Language Academy holds a special place in my heart. My kids attended school here, and I appreciate our outstanding administration and teaching staff. I honed my skills in Ukiah Unified schools, and my leadership pathway also began here. For me, this community is the perfect place to continue my work, and I am eager to collaborate with my colleagues and contribute to our shared goals.”
Jim has been married for almost 29 years to Lorena. They have grown twins, Valentina and Benjamin, who are Grace Hudson Language Academy, Pomolita Middle School, and Ukiah High School alumni. Both graduated high school with the Seal of Biliteracy and now attend the University of California, Merced. Valentina studies Environmental Science, and Ben studies Biology.
Outside of work, Jim still plays basketball at Pomolita three mornings each week. He and the family love to hike and enjoy the great outdoors. Fishing and motorcycle rides are frequent, and Jim and Lorena like to escape on local scenic trips and regularly travel back to Lorena’s community in Oaxaca, Mexico.
