The County of Mendocino has announced the immediate closure of their coastal facility. This closure is very concerning and undoubtedly leaves a large gap in animal services on the coast.
Since 1987, the Mendocino Coast Humane Society (MCHS) has been serving residents of coastal Mendocino county and their furry friends. MCHS is a non-governmental, non-profit organization providing low-cost spay/neuter, animal adoptions, educational programs and veterinary care.
“The closure of the county operated animal shelter will strain our already tight budget and limited space. But, we remain committed to our community and ensuring a safe and healthy environment for lost and surrendered animals of the Mendocino coast.” said Judy Martin, Executive Director of MCHS.
The demand for animal services on the coast far outpaces the supply. MCHS takes in over 200 stray animals, adopts out over 550 animals and performs well over 850 spay/neuters each year. Yet, they maintain a list of over 40 animals waiting to be surrendered and the wait for a spay or neuter appointment is over 3 months.
This is an extremely important moment. The Mendocino Coast Humane Society will continue to support the coast, and has plans to expand all services, including veterinary care but needs community members to show their support. Whether through donations, volunteering, or spreading awareness. Every contribution will make a difference.
