The following is a press release issued by the Willits Police Department:
The City of Willits and the Willits Police Department (WPD) receive many traffic complaints throughout the year. It is our practice to utilize these complaints and “tips” to focus our enforcement to areas of concern within our community and to lower the risk to pedestrians, other drivers, and property, caused by excessive vehicle speed and other unsafe driving.
Recently, the City acquired RADAR speed measuring equipment to aid in speed enforcement efforts. All Officers of the Willits Police Department have now been certified on visual estimation of vehicle speed, as well as the use of RADAR/LIDAR speed measuring equipment. These Officers have been tasked with enforcing the various speed laws and the continued enforcing of California Vehicle Code laws within our community.
In the coming days and weeks, you will notice an increase in enforcement of traffic laws by WPD Officers. The primary goal of this enforcement is increased traffic safety for both pedestrians and the motoring community. We will use a speed awareness trailer as part of our efforts to educate drivers in high-traffic or problematic areas, along with increased enforcement.
With the holidays and winter weather upon us, we would like to remind everyone to slow down and be aware of our local speed limits. Wet or icy roads will require additional slowing and stopping time. Please keep this in mind, especially around our many School Zones.
Visual estimation of speed? How is this legal in court?
Visual estimation is used to target cars with lidar/radar that camera looking device that gives an exact speed.
sounds error prone.
Try telling a judge that!
They should just park across from the post office, it’s everyone’s favorite corner to peel out, rev their engines, and go zoom zoom in with their fossil foolery dollars.
